Nicholas Tulp, a Dutch doctor immortalized in Rembrandt’s painting The Anatomy Lesson was a large proponent of tea as a healthful beverage. Apparently he believed drinking tens or hundreds of cups daily could cleanse the body.
It should also be noted that he served on the board of the Dutch East India Company. (The enterprise that controlled the European tea trade at the time.) Coincidence?
