While England is synonymous with black teas, it may surprise you to know that the first teas to reach ol’ Blighty, the very brews that started it all, were in fact green teas. In 1657, the proprietor of a coffee house — having newly added the beverage to his menu — published an ad that eloquently introduced the British to tea. This in the efforts to drum up business for his new product.
The ad stated: "That Excellent, and by all Physicians approved, China drink, called by the Chinese, Tcha, by other nations Tay alias Tee, ...sold at the Sultaness-head, ye Cophee-house in Sweetings-Rents, by the Royal Exchange, London". The ad worked, and today England is as to tea as America is to apple pie. We’ve got the green teas to prove it!
