Africa - Malawi
In the late 20th century, the tea industry of Malawi underwent a renaissance of sorts. Certainly tea had already been produced in the country for decades (the first farms were cultivated in 1907), but most of what was produced was bulk shipped for tea bagging overseas. All that changed when a prominent tea-growing family, the Cathcart Kays, began experimenting on the farm that had been in their family since the 1920s —Satemwa Estate.
As the result of this experimentation, the factory at Satemwa now produces numerous award-winning black, white, and green teas. As a bonus, thanks to Malawi’s mountainous climate and high altitude, all of these teas are grown without pesticides — pests can’t survive the climate.
Offer your customers:
Named after Malawi’s former capital, Zomba, the handmade tea offers lush floral notes tempered with grassy tones with a round sweetness and clean finish. In addition to their magnificent flavor, one of the big positives of Malawi’s green teas is that unlike many of their global counterparts, they won’t get bitter.
Tasting notes: Smooth and luscious. Captivating flavor highlighted by light floral notes. Tends sweet.
